2013 was a pretty bad year in animation in my opinion, as a whole lot of bad movies in the Animation category came out that year (Free Birds and The Nut Job being notable ones). Granted, not EVERY animated film that came out that year was unbearable, but i just didn't like that year (even some films that were good, like Frozen and Despicable Me 2, are just ones i don't prefer) Nonetheless, EFPE ends up being an alright picture...but would i watch it above other movies? F**k no. The Animation is good, and the voice acting is pretty good as well, and it seems like the actors genuinely want to make a good picture (unlike The Nut Job) and while the story is terribly unoriginal, it at least doesn't insult human history (like Free Birds)...or at least not as much AS Free Birds. So in short, while not unbearable, this movie is definitely able to be skipped.

Decently done, but there's a whole lot better
Funny as heck
I went and saw this in the theater when it first came out, two weeks after opening day, to be precise. I barely heard anyone of the people in the auditorium laughing, but I laughed so hard and so much throughout the runtime of the film that I had to view the film a second time at home to spot other in-jokes and references, for which I missed so many of those! The animation is gorgeous; the colors, the designs, the effects and the backgrounds are truly a wonder to behold, especially due to the fact that this movie was animated by a company that produces direct-to-DVD kids flicks(they've also produced Beast Wars/Transformers, there you go, 90s kids), and the visuals make the most out of fun 3-D gimmicks, unlike other animated films these days. The true shining star of the film other than the humor is the variety of voice talents; all fit their roles perfectly and are hilarious as their characters. Ignore the naysayers and check out this underrated animation that gets just about everything right: the comedy, the animation, the voice acting and the heart. It's not a Lion King or a Shrek, but it's a great entertainment that'll both thrill the kids and the kids at heart.
first half OK
Scorch Supernova is a heroic brash risk-loving alien spaceman. His little brother Gary Supernova is mission control except nobody respects him. He believes that he's the brains and Scorch is the muscles. Worst of all, his son Kip is in awe of Scorch. The next mission is the Dark Planet. 106 advanced lifeforms have tried to make first contact there. None have returned. That planet is Earth. Scorch and Kip have a fight and Kip quits. (or Scorch fired him.) Scorch goes alone and is taken prisoner in Area 51. Gary flies the rescue pod to save Scorch and is captured also.
It's bright and it's wild. It's probably good enough for the little kids. Anybody else would find this tiresome. The cast of great comedians are wasted. I actually like the first half of this movie up to the brain freeze incident. It has set up a nice sibling rivalry. Then they are imprisoned in Area 51. The aliens are overly naive. The movie becomes rather boring. It loses any charm or comedy. The situation back on the alien planet becomes disconnected. The movie is better off with Kip and his mom Kira going to Earth as well. That way, the wife and son could rescue the two arguing brothers.
