(Originally reviewed: 14/02/2017) It's stupid it's unoriginal it's hilariously implausible but unlike most modern action films; I enjoyed it for its sheer fun level. Drop Zone steals material from film's like Point Break and Passenger 57; but that does not necessarily mean it cannot be a fun if stupid little action picture. Snipes (Pete Nessip) is hilarious in the lead role; sometimes I can't tell if he's playing himself or actually acting, but he is tremendously likable anyway. Busey (Ty) plays the villain and he looks like he's enjoying himself and personally I think he was decent; then there's Yancy Butler (Hard Target) who plays Jessie; a skydiver on parole that Snipes's character becomes diving buddies with; and she is pretty good. The supporting cast are fairly decent and John Badham's action sequences are entertaining and well filmed.

However there are plot holes and flaws all over the place; including the opening scene which not only shows an amateur criminal prison break but also shows Busey getting shot twice in the back, and there's no sign of a bulletproof vest but moments later he is okay, not a scratch on him; I can't just put this under the rug and I feel it's stupid, poor and should be pointed out.

There's some noticeably bad dialogue and a joke at the start involving Cat Protection which wasn't funny like the screenwriters thought it was; there's even a scene where a parachute does not open and the guy somehow survives; which is scientifically impossible considering the height he fell from; but in the end I just went with it, because the film knows it's stupid but can still deliver a brisk pace; some good action sequences; (including Snipes beating up some arrogant skydivers in a toilet) and strong entertainment value; all in all I enjoyed Drop Zone; sure it rips off better films; however it at least keeps It's aims clear and it's sense of humour during the action very subtle and its action sequences entertaining; I've seen better but I've also seen much worse; Drop Zone will bring out the 90's action nostalgic in those who remember when action films were mostly fun, unlike some of the drab we get nowadays.

Federal marshal Pete Nessip (Wesley Snipes) and his brother; fellow marshal Terry Nessip (Malcolm Jamal Warner) are escorting a prisoner to Atlanta when the plane they are travelling on is hi-jacked by a bunch of sky-diving criminals led by former DEA agent Ty Moncrief (Gary Busey)The Nessip brothers' prisoner is taken from the marshals custody by said sky-diving criminals (in order to carry out cyber crimes on their behalf). With the help of professional sky-diver Jessie Crossman (Yancy Butler), Pete sets about stopping Moncrief and his crew whilst he simultaneously tries to avenge his brother's death...

As far as action films go then Drop Zone is probably about as generic as they come; there is very little in the way of originality offered up here and no real surprises in store, but what really lets it down is that, for the most part, it just isn't much fun to watch....

It begins with a bang and sets itself up as a tongue-in-cheek action film (which given the material and the rather sub-standard performances this is the only way it can really be looked upon), but it isn't consistently fun and it wavers wildly between dumb-ass cringe-inducing dialogue, back to serious plotting and then back to dumb-ass cringe-inducing dialogue. The director doesn't seem to know how to play the film out and by wildly switching between tones the film never really works and is either embarrassing to watch or just plain dull (and I'm still not sure what is worse).

The performances are pretty poor as well; Busey just embarrasses himself although he does at least look like he's having fun here. Butler is very wooden and brings virtually nothing to the table, but it's Snipes that was the real surprise and given how energetic he can be I was surprised by how much he underplayed the role here - although again this could be the director's fault rather than Snipes.

Drop Zone isn't a total waste though and some of the action scenes (particularly the ones at the start) give the film some life and energy and some of the sky-diving sequences are quite good (although some of these sequences seemed a tad over-indulgent - what exactly was the point of showing all of the sky-divers holding hands in a circle at several thousand feet on numerous occasions??

I really wanted to like Drop Zone as I do normally enjoy a bit of action cheese and hoped that it would be a film that I could say was 'So bad that it's good', but unfortunately, it's mostly just bad.

I have good news and I have bad news.

The bad news first: This films requires too much suspension of belief to seem at all real. A big example: Wesley Snipes' character learns to sky dive so well in a very short time that he saves a woman falling from an airplane without a parachute. A little example, a bad guy falls from a tall building and happens to fall right through the windshield of another bad guy who is in the process of escaping in a truck.

More bad news: Not sure why, but the female actors in this film seem rather pathetic. Maybe they were better in other films, but I found them not the least bit interesting in this film.

So, is there any good news? Yes. Most of the cast did not do their own skydiving; that was left to stuntmen (with the exception of Michael Jeter). Nevertheless, you will see some stunning skydiving here, beautifully filmed.

More good news: From 1991-1997, Wesley Snipes made a number of films I really enjoyed him; in fact he was for a while my favorite action star. This is one of those films. Michael Jeter, a rather quirky actor, does really well here; a most interesting characterization.

The other actors do their jobs here, but don't stand out. Even the unique Gary Busey is up to his role.

So, bottom line -- if you are good at suspending belief and just like to watch a fun action film, I'd say this is a good one for you. If you're more down to earth...maybe more than a tad over the line.
